Barnes Bridge, a hidden gem

The original Barnes Bridge is a hidden Victorian gem. It spans the Thames between Barnes and Chiswick. Built in 1849 and used for only 46 years, this beautiful cast iron Grade II listed bridge closed in 1895. It’s been redundant ever since.

In 1895, a new railway bridge was built immediately adjacent to the original bridge. Still in use today for South Western Railway's Hounslow Loop Line, the bridge hosts a pedestrian footbridge across the river with views towards Hammersmith Bridge.

The vision

Inspired by similar projects such as the High Line in New York, the Promenade Plantée in Paris and the soon-to-be-realised Camden Highline. A local team took on the project to transform this historically important Grade II listed bridge.

It’ll connect Barnes in Richmond and Chiswick in Hounslow via a stunningly attractive landscaped green space.

The view

The View at Barnes Bridge will open up views of the river upstream towards Chiswick Bridge. It’ll give an unbeatable viewing position on Boat Race day and every rowing event throughout the year as well as a year-round view of the river and the setting sun.

A green space that’s environmentally sustainable

The View is an important new attraction for the local communities of Barnes, Hounslow and visitors from a wider area. As a locally-driven project, it’s a significant contribution to the local economy.

The View has the potential to support the mental and physical wellbeing of everyone who enjoys using it.
